On December 14, 2012, Safe and Sound Schools' founder Michele Gay's youngest daughter, Josephine Grace, died in the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. Joey was an extraordinary child in so many ways. Her amazing energy, beautiful smile and kind spirit made her loved by all who knew her. She also had many “special needs” as a student with autism, apraxia of speech, gross motor impairment, and other developmental disorders. We like to say that she was “especially special.” Since Joey’s death, Michele has worked to build a legacy in her honor – a mission to improve the safety of our school communities, filling in the gaps in existing safety planning strategies and ensuring that children like Joey are able to grow up to be the amazing people they were meant to be. A cornerstone of that work is Especially Safe. Through the Especially Safe Program, we detail how teams can plan and prepare, as well as teach and train, to meet the special needs of students, staff, and visitors in your school community – from developmental disabilities to communication challenges, medical needs to mobility challenges, and more. Our free toolkits are designed to facilitate conversations, problem-solving, and partnerships in your school community. Below, you can learn more about each area of our model. Share our resources with your school community members and make a difference together! DOWNLOAD THE TOOLKIT Straight-A Safety Improvement Model Our Straight-A Safety Improvement Model is a way to rethink school safety. Our busy society loves routine check-ups, check-lists, and checkouts. They make us feel accomplished – done. This way of thinking can undermine the safety and security of our schools. School Safety is a process, not a product. Straight-A Safety Improvement contains three active phases: Assess, Act, and Audit. GET THE NEW E-GUIDE To Assess, your school community will examine its preparedness for emergency situations. A team of community members and experts will come together to examine what measures, plans, programs, and procedures are already in place and working well and the areas that require change and improvement. To Act, your school community will turn the information gathered and lessons learned in the Assessment phase into a plan of action. This is where plans, programs, and procedures are developed and/or refined, and where safety and security measures are implemented, repaired, or changed. To Audit is to test, check and refine the measures, plans, programs, and procedures in place in your school community. It is an active phase that combines continual vigilance and awareness with formal and measured testing of the safety and security measures, plans, and procedures of your school.
