You will see a number of different organizations, foundations, and works started by Sandy Hook families as a way to help others and heal from the tragedy. Safe and Sound Schools is unique in its focus on positive and practical ways to empower communities to improve school safety. Does Safe & Sound have a political agenda? No, we are a grassroots organization with no political ties or obligations. Safe & Sound is committed to a nonpartisan approach to problem solving. To make the greatest impact upon school security and safety issues, we look to engage all local and national community members in active problem solving together. School security and safety are everyone’s prerogative. Does Safe & Sound take a position on gun control? We advocate for highly specific preparations, plans, and measures tailored to the safety and security needs of each school building and community. Security guards and police officers are one possible measure schools can put in place to improve safety. At Safe and Sound, we advocate for multiple layers of protection in order to best secure the safety of your school community. Further, a thoughtful, professional safety assessment within one community may warrant the employment of security guards or police officers, while it may not be warranted or practical in another community. This decision belongs to each individual school community and will depend on the needs, budget, and desires of that community. Does Safe & Sound have a position on arming school staff? We advocate for the presence of sworn law enforcement officers in the school community, specifically school resource officers. Their specific training allows them to best serve as a safety resource to staff and students, build proactive relationships within the community, and carry a firearm and/or other tools to provide protection and intervention when necessary. While it is expensive and time intensive to train civilian staff members to safely carry and use a firearm in the same capacity, factors such as geography, man-power, and local resources have forced some school communities to explore other options. Further, the culture, climate, and values of each school community are unique and important considerations. For these reasons, we believe that the decision to arm school personnel or not, must reside at the local level and include representation from a variety of community perspectives and professional disciplines. Why do you not support door barricdes and all secondary locking devices? As we tackle the issue of school safety, it is important we don’t sacrifice one category for another. Understanding the laws and policies affecting schools should be a key part of a community’s comprehensive school safety plan. While we applaud the good intentions of many manufacturers of door barricade and secondary locking devices, Safe and Sound Schools firmly advocates for installing locking devices that comply with federal and state fire codes from the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA ) as well as regulations from the Americans with Disabilities Act . We encourage all solution providers to continue to innovate for safety and security in accordance with laws and standards so together, we can make our schools safer. • Our Team | Safe and Sound Schools | United States

The Safe and Sound Schools team of speakers, trainers, and experts. Our mission is to support school crisis prevention, response, and recovery, and to protect every school and every student, every day. EXECUTIVE TEAM Michele Gay Founder & Executive Director Mother, educator, and co-founder of Safe and Sound Schools®, Michele Gay chose to take action after losing her daughter Josephine Grace on December 14, 2012 in the Sandy Hook School tragedy. Since that time, Michele has channeled her work as an advocate, improving safety and security in schools and communities across our country. With a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Towson State University, Michele earned a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from McDaniel College. Prior to the Sandy Hook tragedy, she taught at the elementary level in the Maryland and Virginia public schools. Now a nationally and internationally recognized public speaker and school safety advocate, Michele speaks to audiences and consults with all levels of community institutions — schools; municipalities; houses of worship; educational and public safety leadership; state and federal governments; law enforcement agencies; and top news media sources. Through her work, and always with a goal of helping others increase the safety within their own communities, Michele shares her personal experiences and the lessons she has learned. The recipient of numerous national awards, Michele is a regular contributor for print, radio, and television outlets. Visionary, author, and co-author of Safe and Sound’s programs and materials, Michele has served as a stakeholder voice in national legislative discussions. Through these works, Michele continues to build Safe and Sound Schools® as a national hub of school safety education, technical assistance, expert content, and best practices. Michele’s impassioned position on school safety hinges on every community taking a comprehensive and sustainable approach to safety. She works diligently to unite stakeholders of all disciplines and perspectives. As an educator, mother, and survivor of tragedy, Michele is uniquely positioned to help others prepare for, prevent, respond to, and recover from tragedies of their own. Michele remains inspired by Josephine, every day. Take a look at some of our ongoing projects below. Have questions or want to learn more? Reach out to us —we’d love to hear from you! STAYING SAFE SCHOOL SAFETY RESPONSE TRAINING (TEXAS) In partnership with the Texas School Safety Center and Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT), Safe and Sound Schools developed Staying Safe, an age- and developmentally-appropriate response curriculum. Staying Safe aims to prepare students for potentially dangerous situations, instilling confidence and a sense of preparedness. Rooted in the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) approach developed by ALERRT, Staying Safe leverages the expertise of the ALERRT Center at Texas State University, which offers the nation’s leading research-based active attack response training. CRASE was originally developed to train civilians to survive active attacks, with a primary focus on adults. The Staying Safe program adapts this expert knowledge to the needs of young people, using age-appropriate and developmentally suitable techniques. Staying Safe equips students with essential, practical, and lifelong tools that enable them to confidently handle emergencies in various settings, including schools, public places, or at home. This comprehensive, all-hazards approach to personal safety empowers young people to navigate unsafe situations effectively. This curriculum is being offered as a six-hour train-the-trainer session for all regional Education Service Centers (ESC) across Texas. STAY SAFE KIDS In partnership with Drexel University School of Education, Safe and Sound Schools is developing a curriculum to guide schools in their safety planning efforts. Utilizing developmentally appropriate and trauma-informed practices, the curriculum is designed for delivery by school staff to teach all students how to respond to situations at school and maintain their safety. The curriculum will undergo a rigorous development process through collaboration with participating schools, pilot testing, and continuous improvement over the course of three years. The project will culminate in a fully developed curriculum suitable for replication and sustainable implementation across schools. This project is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. TENNESSEE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL SAFETY PROGRAM Safe and Sound Schools is grateful for longstanding partnerships with various organizations across the state of Tennessee. With the goal of implementing a comprehensive school safety framework , our collaborations with these stakeholder groups include hosting in-person and virtual school safety summits, providing training on a wide variety of topics, and working with Tennessee-based school safety experts. Recently, we were awarded a BJA grant to deliver advanced Behavioral Threat Assessment training for schools that have already completed previous training. Many of these initiatives are supported by state and federal grants. PROJECT UNITE Safe and Sound Schools partnered with the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado Boulder, the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO), and the I Love U Guys Foundation, among other organizations and subject matter experts, to develop a comprehensive approach to violence prevention. The key components, or systems, of Project Unite are: Positive school culture and climate Bystander reporting and response Information sharing Behavioral threat and suicide assessment and management Project Unite provides step-by-step guidance for implementing each component using a comprehensive approach informed by federal recommendations, research, and community policing principles. Schools can adapt the implementation of these components to address their unique needs, resources, and students’ age and developmental levels. UTAH SCHOOL SAFETY SUMMIT In collaboration with the Utah School Safety Center, as well as other state and national organizations, Safe and Sound Schools designed and delivered the 2024 Utah School Safety Conference in Riverton, UT. This two-day event brought together school safety staff from across the state to hear from powerful keynote speakers and engage in practical and informative breakout sessions. Focusing on a comprehensive approach to school safety, these sessions covered topics including drug/alcohol awareness, bleeding control, threat assessment, digital threat assessment, crisis communication, inclusive safety preparedness, and a debrief of national school safety incidents. Overall, the 2024 Utah School Safety Conference provided a valuable opportunity for K-12 leaders to learn from nationally recognized speakers and acquire best practices supporting comprehensive school safety. • Our Story | Safe and Sound Schools | United States

Safe and Sound Schools story. We are Sandy Hook parents, educators, and community members—all inspired by our children and educators who perished on December 14, 2012. We chose to raise our families in Newtown, CT, a small town where crime is low and values are strong. We chose Sandy Hook Elementary School, a place of love, learning, and acceptance. When our children boarded their school buses and their teachers left for work on December 14th, we never imagined that it might be for the last time WHO WE ARE We are Sandy Hook parents, educators, and community members—all inspired by our children and educators who perished on December 14, 2012. We chose to raise our families in Newtown, CT, a small town where crime is low and values are strong. We chose Sandy Hook Elementary School, a place of love, learning, and acceptance. When our children boarded their school buses and their teachers left for work on December 14th, we never imagined that it might be for the last time. We all felt safe in our peaceful town and in our high-ranking schools. We learned, too painfully, that we were not. Gaining entry to our locked school–and access to our beloved children and teachers–was as simple as breaking a glass window. The measures, plans, and procedures we relied upon failed us, tragically. Despite our sorrow, and though we come from a variety of backgrounds, we are united in our mission: To better protect our schools. To provide safe schools, secure schools, for our children and educators. And to help others do the same in their communities. Joined by school communities across the country and supported by national school safety experts, mental health, fire, and law enforcement professionals, our community has grown and our resolve has strengthened. Together we can make a difference. Together we can make our schools Safe and Sound.
