Standing in the Gap: How Student-Driven Incident Reporting Guides our Sycamore Safety Initiatives After an averted school shooting in 2016, safety and security became more than just a broad concept for Sycamore Middle School in rural Cheatham County - thirty miles west of Nashville, Tennessee. In the aftermath, school officials around the world reached out asking about the school culture that had brought about a peaceful resolution when an armed eighth grader relinquished his weapon to counseling staff after a ninety-minute intervention. In this presentation, school counselors, Molly Hudgens and Matthew Shuff, will share how their staff navigated behavioral threat assessment initiatives, focused on school culture, and, forced by the pandemic, created a simple, yet effective method for student reporting. Challenged with finding a way for students to communicate threats, concerns, and requests for counseling, Hudgens and Shuff developed an incident reporting system that now, in year three, drives Sycamore Middle's safety initiatives. Born out of necessity, this streamlined approach allows students direct access to the school's support team and has become a way for a trusted adult to provide interventions, offer care, and develop rapport with students who are struggling while simultaneously gathering data and tracking students of concern. Designed for audiences of school administrators, counselors, classroom educators, nurses, social workers, school resource officers, and support staff, this presentation shows how the whole-school approach, led by the students themselves, has saved lives at Sycamore Middle and can teach others how to do the same in their own school communities. He told her, “I think you’re the only person who can talk me out of this.” After ninety minutes of talking and ultimately praying with the young man on her knees beside him, Hudgens was able to convince the student to relinquish the weapon to her with no shots fired and no lives lost. As a result of her intervention, Hudgens became a 2017 recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Citizens Honor for a single act of heroism. After a personal experience in college, her interest in violence prevention and safety sparked a desire to educate others who work with intervening in the lives of potentially violent teenagers. Her in-depth study on school shootings and the teenagers who commit these acts, “Recognizing Red Flags,” written prior to the averted school shooting incident at her school, has been utilized nationally to train professionals in the fields of education, law enforcement, juvenile probation, and juvenile court. The training focuses on understanding the three types of school shooters and how to use threat assessment tools as an intervention to prevent violent acts in a school and community setting. Hudgens, the 2004-2005 and 2016-2017 Sycamore Middle School and Cheatham County Middle School Teacher of the Year, is also the 2017 recipient of the Tennessee School Counseling Association’s Phoebe White Award for Excellence in School Counseling and the 2019 Mental Health of the Midsouth's I.C. Hope Award for bringing mental health awareness to schools. Hudgens has been the recipient of three state recognitions for heroic actions on September 28, 2016—a Proclamation from the Tennessee House of Representatives in October of 2016, House Resolution No. 66 from the Tennessee House of Representatives in March of 2017, and Senate Resolution No. 40 from the Tennessee State Senate in April of 2017. Mrs. Hudgens has also been a nominee for the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission as well as the American Hero Channel’s Red Bandanna Hero Award in 2017. Book Molly TODAY! Testimonials

The Averted School Violence (ASV) Project provides foundational evidence-based research to support efforts to stop targeted school attacks by building sustainable, community-based prevention and intervention services, education, and consultation services The AVERTED SCHOOL VIOLENCE PROJECT The Averted School Violence Program creates a data-driven approach to stopping targeted school attacks by building sustainable, community-based prevention and intervention strategies. GET TRAINING Frank Straub, PhD Senior Advisor of Violence Prevention Research WHAT IS The Averted School Violence Project? Following the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Community Oriented Policing (COPS) convened a national school safety advisory group to provide recommendations on how to prevent future school shootings and other acts of violence on school campuses. One key recommendation stood out among the others: Build a national repository of cases where school violence was stopped before it occurred. Based on these recommendations, the DOJ’s COPS Office allocated funding for the National Policing Institute (formerly the Police Foundation) to establish and maintain the Averted School Violence (ASV) database. From 2015 to 2023, the National Policing Institute built a strong foundation of research and reports that shaped school safety practices nationwide. In 2023, Dr. Frank Straub, who previously served as the founder and director of the National Policing Institute’s Center for Targeted Violence Prevention, as well as ASV’s project lead, secured a new home for the database right here with Safe and Sound Schools. The transfer, improvement in functionality, and expansion of the Averted School Violence Database was made possible through Prevent 2 Protect, a Michigan Department of Education Pilot Project. ASV and Safe and Sound, founded out of the same tragedy and on the same mission to protect every school, every student, every day, are now united to create a more powerful, data-driven tool that empowers school safety leaders to prevent tragedy before it occurs. EXPLORE THE DATABASE The Enhanced ASV Database and New Website With ASV’s move to Safe and Sound Schools, and the expanded support of partners like the Motorola Foundation and National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO), we’ve enhanced the platform’s value by making it more accessible, more actionable, and more useful in the day-to-day work of preventing violence in our schools. With a new website and streamlined submission process, it’s now easier for SROs, school officials, and safety professionals to securely share cases of averted or completed violence. Additionally, we’ve added new filters and features to help users sort through cases by variables like school type, intervention type, threat source, and more. Most importantly, we’ve focused on ensuring the database isn’t just a storage tool—it’s a living resource that fuels evidence-based training and community conversations. CHECK IT OUT Take Action Join our mission to improve school safety and prevent future violence by anonymously and securely submitting an averted incident for review. Share our resources with your school community members and make a difference together! DOWNLOAD THE TOOLKIT Straight-A Safety Improvement Model Our Straight-A Safety Improvement Model is a way to rethink school safety. Our busy society loves routine check-ups, check-lists, and checkouts. They make us feel accomplished – done. This way of thinking can undermine the safety and security of our schools. School Safety is a process, not a product. Straight-A Safety Improvement contains three active phases: Assess, Act, and Audit. GET THE NEW E-GUIDE To Assess, your school community will examine its preparedness for emergency situations. A team of community members and experts will come together to examine what measures, plans, programs, and procedures are already in place and working well and the areas that require change and improvement. To Act, your school community will turn the information gathered and lessons learned in the Assessment phase into a plan of action. This is where plans, programs, and procedures are developed and/or refined, and where safety and security measures are implemented, repaired, or changed. To Audit is to test, check and refine the measures, plans, programs, and procedures in place in your school community. It is an active phase that combines continual vigilance and awareness with formal and measured testing of the safety and security measures, plans, and procedures of your school.

Grooming 101 1 Hour In this powerful presentation, Michelle sheds light on the insidious grooming process. Michelle shares her journey while dissecting each step of grooming. Through her dual lens as both a survivor and an administrator’s wife, she reveals how predators exploit a child’s natural desire for love, manipulating them into unwittingly consenting to their violation. Michelle also addresses the tendency to blame victims rather than hold perpetrators accountable. Her insights highlight the critical need for training and dispelling societal misconceptions so we can better protect our children. These failures have far-reaching consequences, affecting individuals, entire communities, and institutions. It Is Your Business 3-hour (½ day PD) with “Grooming 101” included The "It Is Your Business" program builds upon the foundational "Grooming 101 - A Predator's Playbook," offering a deeper exploration into the complexities of grooming and sexual abuse. This expanded session covers key risk factors, signs to watch for, and how societal misconceptions and generalizations often distort our understanding of these behaviors. The program also highlights the long-term impacts on victims, aiming to educate adults on the nuances of grooming and equip them with the knowledge needed for prevention and intervention. This initiative empowers participants to better protect the well-being of children and young adults by providing a comprehensive understanding of predatory behaviors and the grooming process. The session also includes a brief overview of mandated reporter laws and, for institutions in Illinois, details on Faith’s Law. Grooming 101 (Extended) 2 Hours This session includes all the aspects of the Basic 1 hour with the addition of an overview of societal misconceptions about sexual violence, supported by real-life cases and court documents. The extended 2-hour session goes further into exploring the long-term emotional and psychological impact on survivors and what it’s like to live with the effects of sexual violence for a lifetime. It Is Your Business (Extended) Full day (9:00 to 3:30 with 1-hour lunch and breaks built into each hour) This program is identical to the three hours with the exception that it includes extended training on Mandated Reporting, Faith’s Law, and Title IX regulations in K-12 schools Grooming 101 (Student) The student program does not include the same statistics as the adult program. The student program also speaks to students on their level and where they are in their age group. For example: “How many of you have heard your parents say: ‘Just wait till you grow up! You think you have it bad now.’” I try to show them that we, as adults in society, often forget how hard it is to be a kid. In that forgetfulness, we neglect to share with them or understand how vulnerable they are to “grooming” behaviors and abuse. Her energy, passion, and strength kept the audience on the edge of their seats, and when it was over they wanted more. I have never, in my 12 years of education, experienced such a moving presentation.” -Principal Kashia Cook, Christopher School Go Go Speaker BIOGRAPHY Michelle Denault, owner and founder of “Voices Carry, LLC”, is a survivor of Educator Sexual Abuse and the creator of the training “Grooming 101 - A Predator’s Playbook”. In 2015, after decades of believing she had been in a “love relationship” with a trusted teacher, a moment in time shifted her perspective and opened her eyes to the truth that she hadn't been loved but instead preyed on and abused. Since that time, Michelle has been speaking her truth, advocating for change, and in a fight in the justice system to bring accountability to her abuser and his enablers. Michelle teaches “Grooming 101” in schools and at conferences to train adults on how to recognize the signs a child is being groomed and to teach students how to recognize they or their peers may be being groomed. Michelle is married to Mike Denault, Superintendent of the Waltonville School District, and has two boys, Jonny and Jacob Forbes, and two stepdaughters, Emersyn and Addysen. Book Michelle TODAY!
