Approximately a year before the center opened, Marion School District Director of Facilities Liz Wooten approached Bright Futures Marion about a portable classroom that was being removed from one of the district’s schools. Rather than viewing it as a building that had outlived its purpose, they saw an opportunity.

As conversations about school safety, student well-being, and academic success continue to evolve, I believe we have an opportunity to think bigger about who belongs at the table. Safety is not solely the responsibility of school resource officers. Student wellness is not solely the responsibility of counselors. Academic success is not solely the responsibility of teachers.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder to slow down and consider whether we are doing everything possible to support the mental health of students in our communities.
